30x40" Western Gull in his Mating Plumage

Early morning in San Diego, with threat of storms rolling in but I have an hour before I have to head back to Phoenix, so I grab my trusty Canon and run out. I traveled down to Mission Beach and parked all the way at the end, South Mission Beach. The waves are slamming against the barge and the clouds are saying, any minute now guy. I climbed out onto Point Medanos, navigating the extremely large boulders and that's when I met this beautiful Western Gull sitting on a boulder. I started out at least 30 ft away when I first noticed him, and as I slowly approached, I kept my breath slow begging the heavens to not have this beauty fly off before I get close enough for a clear shot. Luckily, my prayers were answered as he let me get about 4 or 5 ft away. 
 
When photographing wildlife, you are always chasing that one fleeting second of absolute clarity and connection. I captured this Western Gull at the absolute peak of its mating plumage, isolating the subject against a deep, shadowed background. This contrast strips away all the coastal noise and draws your focus exactly where it belongs: the intense, striking gaze of the bird.
