Death Valley Salt
LIMITED EDITION - 25 SIGNED AND DATED PIECES
There is a specific kind of stillness found 282 feet below sea level—a place where the heat isn't just a temperature, but a physical weight. At the heart of Death Valley, the hottest place on Earth, I stood over these crystalline salt polygons as the sun began its relentless ascent hitting 110° before 9 am.
Capturing "Death Valley Salt" required more than just showing up; it required waiting for that precise moment when the light catches the razor-sharp edges of the sodium chloride crystals, turning a harsh, inhospitable crust into a shimmering, ethereal landscape. While the mind wants to compare the visuals of the white salt to our understanding of snow, it is anything but. As I lay on my belly to capture this close-up image the salt immediately irritates your skin with it's abrasive and dehydrating nature. Sharp enough to your knees and palms, you realize I'm not going to be able to shoot this the same as any other scene in nature, this needs to be shot with precision and professional quickness.
As an endorsed CANON photographer, my goal is always to bridge the gap between the raw power of the environment and the delicate textures that the human eye often misses. Shot with the uncompromising precision of the Canon 5D Mark III paired with a 50 mm prime lens, every micro-fissure and mineral ridge in this foreground is rendered with a depth that makes the salt feel tangible, as if you could reach out and feel the desert’s heat radiating from the canvas.
